“The Tree Sunburnt” is a long-term project centered around a single tree with a hollow trunk. It began when I came across it on my way home and noticed it was sunburnt. The tree was being destroyed by its very source of nourishment, yet it continued to spread its branches toward the sunlight. Drawn to this ironic vitality, I observed the tree over time—sprouting new leaves in the spring, flourishing in the summer, getting scratched, and providing shelter for a spider.
I began noticing other trees—some cut down because their trunks were hollow, others wrapped in aluminum as protection from the sun. As I shared the story of this tree with others, some wanted to see it for themselves. I took them to the tree, and we spent time together there. My photography became a record of this shared resonance.
Through this series, I explore the coexistence of fragility and vitality, self-destruction and resilience. It speaks to the ironic vitality of beings who, like the tree, seek what may hurt them, yet find recognition and care in their shared fragility.
우연히 마주친 나무 한 그루는 속이 텅 비어 있었다. 왜 그런 건지, 나무가 괜찮은 건지 궁금해진 나는 그 나무가 햇빛에 화상을 입고 썩어가는 중이란 것을 알게 되었다. 필수적인 양분에 의해 썩어가는 나무. 나무를 다시 가서 보았을 때 나무는 화상을 입어 파먹힌 쪽으로 가장 튼튼한 가지를 뻗고 있었다.
그후 나무가 봄에 새잎을 틔우고, 여름에 무성해지고, 가을에 마른잎을 떨어뜨리는 것을 지켜보았다. 속이 비어서 잘려 나가는 나무, 햇볕을 막으려는 듯 나무를 감싸고 있는 알루미늄 같은 것에 관심이 갔다. 말로 명확히 설명되지 않는 이유에서 나는 어느새 나무와 얽혀 세상을 느끼고 행동하고 있었다. 근황을 이야기하다 나무에 대해 들은 친구 몇몇은 크게 감응하는 듯한 반응을 보였고, 나는 그들을 나무 앞으로 데려와 함께 시간을 보냈다.
이건 나무와 해에 대한 이야기다. 그리고 자기파괴와 생명력이 공존하는 아이러니한 삶에 대한 이야기. 그 점에서 서로를 알아보고 염려하는 존재들의 이야기다.
