“Islands, but indeed a continent”
Cori’s work flows from the sentence she immediately wrote in her diary at 17.
Cori is a transdisciplinary artist whose works emerge through l’écriture féminine, corporeal reading, vocal gestures, material play, video collage, scribbles, and shared presence. Grounded in the lived experiences of being hard of hearing, of inhabiting a sick body, of migration, and of being othered within institutional frameworks, her artistic practice focuses on body as a site for stories that remain unspoken in society.
She crafts porous, everchanging assemblages, as an existential gesture, through absurd and fragile acts —such as hosting picnics in front of a tree, grumbling while unrolling a toilet paper roll, and inviting others to send photos of abandoned beds. With a critical lens toward ableist and institutional logics, her artistic practice refuses mastery but opens new epistemic and political questions where subtle ruptures, shared disorientation, and intimate misalignment sing in choir.

“Islands, but indeed a continent 섬인 줄 알았는데, 바다 밑으로 연결되어 있는 대륙이었네.” 정승은의 작업은 17살 불현듯 다이어리에 써버린 문장에서 발현된다.
정승은은 가장 개인적인 이야기와 사소한 몸의 감각에 집중하며, 여성적 글쓰기, 육체적 읽기, 목소리 연주, 물질과의 놀이, 비디오 콜라주, 낙서, 함께 있기 등의 방법으로 작업한다. 나무 앞에서 피크닉을 열거나, 두루마리 휴지를 풀어헤치며 불평하고, 길가에 버려진 침대의 사진을 보내달라고 한다. 에이블리즘과 제도적 논리를 비판적으로 응시하며, 훈련된 기술이나 장인적인 솜씨 대신, 아주 작은 (때로는 장난스러운) 개입으로 사회가 말하지 않는 그래서 혼자만의 것인 것 같은 감정들이 드러나게 한다. 형식적 관습을 해체하고, 개인과 집단의 감각이 공명하는 공간을 만든다.
정승은의 작업은 일상의 작은 실천과 의문들로 끊임없이 변하는 다공성의 어셈블리지이다. 물리학, 인지과학, 철학, 문학, 사회학 등 폭넓은 관심으로 세상을 탐구하는 유년시절을 보냈고, 서울대학교에서 사회학과 미디어아트를 전공했다. 학제 간 제도와 실천의 차이에서 발생하는 이질감, 난청으로 인한 소리 경험, 이주 등 이방인으로서의 경험은 근대적 제도와 시스템을 질문하게 했다. 2024년 텍스트 기반의 작업을 ‘소리, 자두, 조각’ 책으로 출판하고, 개인전 ‘피폭된 신체들의 집’을 열었다.
