“Islands, but indeed a continent”
Cori’s work flows from the sentence she immediately wrote in her diary at 17.
Cori is a transdisciplinary artist, writer, and researcher based in Seoul and The Hague. Her work investigates the chasm between body and language, how they desire and fail each other. She writes fragmented texts as materials, sings with broken pronunciation, composes visceral video collages, and improvises movement as if uncultured. Her work explores the human drive toward legibility, alongside illegibility as a place where pleasure inhabits and beings attune to each other. The feral and the ethereal collide, and viewers often describe her works through transparency, irony, and poeticity.
Her inquiry has taken shape between formal training in classical violin and academic thinking, and a self-taught hunger for l’écriture féminine and DIY cultures. With her experiences of hearing loss, illness, migration, her practice is a deviant form of research that focuses on patiency as a counterpart of agency, spanning autotext, emotional immersion, gazing at contradictions, porosity to the world as methodologies.

“Islands, but indeed a continent 섬인 줄 알았는데, 바다 밑으로 연결되어 있는 대륙이었네.” 정승은의 작업은 17살 불현듯 다이어리에 써버린 문장에서 발현된다.
정승은은 서울과 헤이그를 기반으로 활동하는 다학제 예술가, 작가, 연구자이다. 몸과 언어 사이의 간극에 관심을 두고, 서로를 욕망하고 배반하는 긴장관계를 탐구한다. 사회적 언어 질서에서 탈락되는 몸의 감각에 집중하고, 신체적 사건으로 언어를 다룬다. 알아들을 수 없는 발음으로 시를 노래하고, 텍스트를 물질로 대하며, 순간적인 바람과 소리에 얽혀 퍼포먼스한다. 투명성, 아이러니, 시는 정승은의 작업을 가장 자주 기웃거리는 언어다.
오랫동안 클래식 바이올린을 연주했고, 서울대학교에서 사회학과 미디어아트를 복수전공했다. 난청, 질병, 이주의 경험은 앎과 느낌에 부여된 경계와 위계를 질문하게 했다. 2024년 ‘소리, 자두, 조각’을 출판하고, 개인전 ‘피폭된 신체들의 집’을 열었다. 정승은에게 작업은 학문적 엄밀함과 언어의 규율을 벗어난 확장된 연구이자 놀이다. 텍스트, 발화, 몸, 물질, 이미지는 서로를 침투하며 서로를 겪는다.
